Making Your Own Beauty Products
Making your own beauty products is a creative and fun process to do and means you always know what is in your products. You choose the scent, the colour, the consistency.
Some natural beauty products are very simple to make and others are very complicated. The products we make in our workshops are at the easier end of the spectrum, and are a great way to get started on your product making adventure!
The main things that you need to know when making your own products are:
- What you would like it to do. Are you wanting to protect your lips with a lip balm? Maybe you want a relaxing body oil? Perhaps your hands need some extra care and love, or maybe your feet.
- Once you have decided what to make, it's all about the ingredients and what they can do. Which ingredients work together, how do they work on your skin, will they work together. This is the fun part!
- The third element is the safety especially of essential oils, but also the other ingredients being used. There are many online recipes, but they are not always safe. Even though essential oils smell beautiful, they can be toxic if used wrongly. I will take you through the key things to consider when making your own products.
You may have many of the ingredients in natural beauty products in your kitchen or home already, for example sugar, salt or coffee grinds for body scrubs - not to mention the spices or cocoa or even grated citrus fruits! You may have a variety of oils in the cupboard and herbs in your garden that are beneficial for skin. Flowers like the Calendula (pot marigold) grow for most of the year and are one of the most incredible plants for skin health as they contain properties which support the skin's microbiome. Another plant I use a lot is Rosemary which is great for hair. I have a big Aloe Vera plant which is worth a blog of it's own for the fabulous things it can do for skin healing!
I have a large collection of essential oils as you would expect but it's possible to have one or two of your favourite scents to work with effectively. It's important to know how to use them and how much to use as they can be harmful if used incorrectly. Lavender is a great oil as it's very safe and it has so many benefits for skin and wellbeing. Another lovely oil for skin is Mandarin which works to help regenerate the cells.
It's like magic!
*WARNING* Once you start making products, it can get quite addictive! :)
